The Speed of Life

May 16, 2011 by

Life is crazy right now. It’s going by at the speed of…well, life. Each day has been blurring into the other and the weeks are turning into months before I have a chance to process it. I’ve discovered that sometimes time seems to flow by quickly and sometimes it flows slowly, but one thing is for sure: life is very short and we need to appreciate what we have while it’s still here.

Here’s what I’m doing these days in an attempt to hold onto moments in the chaos of crazy days:

  • Stopping whenever I can during my regular commuting walks to appreciate the wind and sun (and sometimes even rain) on my face.
  • Engaging in real conversations with my coworkers – even when I don’t have time for it. Talking, even briefly, about their lives or sharing a funny anecdote is a plus.
  • Lots of cuddling, quiet conversations and loud laughs with my fiance.
  • Trying to appreciate even the more mundane wedding planning tasks like labeling invitations. I’ll only do this once so I’m trying to actually enjoy it.
  • Listening to my backlog of “This American Life” podcasts. Seriously, its the best radio show I’ve ever listened to, bar none. I highly recommend that you download previous episodes, listen to them and then subscribe to future podcasts, right now.
  • Playing softball with my team The Fighting Green Weasels, even when I don’t feel like it. Being out on the Mall, enjoying the sunshine and my fellow players is always joyful (even when we’re losing).
  • Breathing. Nice, deep breaths.

What do you do when things get crazy? How do you hold onto sanity and even try to enjoy the craziness while it lasts? I’d love to hear your suggestions!
