My year in review

Jan 3, 2011 by

I have to admit that I don’t view the turning of the year in the same way many (most?) people do. For me, the beginning of a ‘new’ year is pretty much just another day. The reason I say this is that I think choosing an arbitrary date to focus resolutions or new phases of your life around seems kind of silly. If you’re ready to make a change you should just do it instead of waiting for a new year. If you feel the need to reflect on what is going on in your life, you should also just do it right now (heck, I do it all the time). But having said all that, I do know that it can be interesting and even satisfying to review the changes that have happened since the year last turned; in looking back, I’ve found more than I thought I would.

Here are just a few notable things that happened this year – in no particular order. I’d love to know some of your accomplishments from 2010 and things you’re looking forward to in the new year – comments please!

  • Launched my new website! This was one of the toughest things I did this year, but thanks to help from a very good friend who actually did most of the legwork, I have a great new website that I love.
  • On a very personal note, my partner and I got engaged. Being engaged is wonderful but thinking about and planning a wedding has been stressful (not to mention expensive to save for). Wish us luck as we keep trying to plan a fun wedding that won’t break our bank!
  • Participated in the the website launch of the Nonprofit Millennial Bloggers Alliance. As I’ve written about before, the Alliance is made up of young writers collectively bringing important issues about the nonprofit sector to the forefront. While each of us looks at the sector from a different perspective we share the view that millennials offer something valuable to nonprofits. Keep your eye out for even more cool things coming from the Alliance in 2011!
  • Began working with Thurman Consulting. Working with Rosetta and her team has been a wonderful experience so far and I’m looking forward to much more in the new year.
  • Started in two new roles:
    • As a citizen member of the Arlington County Transportation Commission – After a couple of 3 and 4 hour meetings and a wonderful holiday happy hour, I’m now a fully-fledged member of the Commission. Arlington is constantly shifting and changing so 2011 promises to bring more exciting developments and transportation needs for us to consider.
    • As a Leadership Council member with YNPNdc – It should be obvious by now that I love YNPNdc. Now that I’m serving as a member of the Communications Committee, I love it even more! YNPNdc (and the Communications Committee in particular) is full of so many amazing young leaders who are making the DC area nonprofit sector better everyday; it makes me humble and grateful to be involved with them all. I hope you can join us for some of our events coming up in 2011.

Thanks so much for your support, comments, tweets and much more throughout the last year. I hope you’ll stay with me into 2011 by subscribing to receive new posts by email or RSS. Thanks again and Happy New Year!
